The Best Things in Life Aren’t Things
10 Essentials for a Meaningful Life
by Peggy Anderson
“The purpose of life is a life of purpose.” –Robert Byrne
“Everything that’s really worthwhile in life comes to us free—our minds, our souls, our bodies, our hopes, our dreams, our intelligence, our love of family and friends, and country. All of these priceless possessions are free.” —Earl Nightingale

This is a beautiful quote, and…how true it is!

Think about it. You can lose all of your money and start over. If your house burns down, you can rebuild it. It’s the things in life that cost you nothing that you can never replace.

We all know there are many distractions along the road of life that will try to pull us away from our values. Sometimes we are forced to make difficult choices. But a good rule of thumb is that when you have to sacrifice material possessions for one of those “free things” that life has given you…you’ve made the right choice.

And that’s what our newest book, The Best Things In Life Aren’t Things, is all about. It’s a beautifully designed book filled with stories and quotes for the ten essentials for a meaningful life.

I’d like to share a brief excerpt from the chapter on Purpose. Enjoy!

The Best Things in Life Aren’t Things

What are your greatest gifts? How can you best serve mankind? These are questions you must answer to find your true purpose in life.

Who am I?
What am I meant to do here?
What am I trying to do with my life?

These are powerful questions that can be difficult to answer. They sometimes surface during major life transitions such as family strife, job loss, spiritual awakenings, or the death of a loved one.

Every person is a unique being. There is only one of you in the universe. You have many obvious gifts and other gifts still waiting to be discovered.

I truly believe, however, that one of the most important questions you can ask yourself in your jouney to find your purpose is, “How can I serve others?”

Albert Schweitzer said it well: “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”

There are over 800 million undernourished people in the world today. Hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to health worldwide. Yet there is enough food in the world to feed everyone. In San Francisco, California, 1 out of 4 people go hungry at some point during the month. There are also more than 4,000 restaurants in the city that throw away excess food. Mary Risley, founder of Tante Marie’s Cooking School, decided to do something to prevent that. In 1987, together with a small group of women, she started a grassroots initiative called Food Runners to help alleviate hunger, prevent food waste, and create community. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Let’s be grateful, because:
“Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance.
Chaos to order.
Confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast.
A house into a home.
A stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past.
Brings peace for today.
Creates vision for tomorrow.
We can start with who we are
and what we have today,
apply gratitude
and let it work it’s magic”.
– MELODY BEATTIE – WRITER

So let’s be grateful.
God Bless you all.
